Sanchez and Goldstein Lead Huntington Golf

The Huntington golf team finished the season with a 4-10 record but displayed enough potential to produce optimism for next fall’s campaign when the Blue Devils will have seven players returning to the links.

Edgar Sanchez and Dan Goldstein led the team with some sharp play.  Huntington’s home course is the Crescent Club and Mike Marinello, who coaches the Blue Devils, hopes to make it the scene of future school championships in the sport.

Sanchez shot a season-low 2 under 34 at Smithtown Landing during the season, offering a glimpse of his potential.  “Edgar is a very steady and consistent golfer,” Marinello said.  “He works as a caddie during the summer and has great understanding of the game.  He will be missed next season.”

Goldstein was firmly anchored in the second spot in the lineup.  “Danny is a very strong and athletic golfer,” Marinello said.  “Danny improved his match scores dramatically from the beginning of the season.  He has the potential to be All-County this spring.”

Brian Uvena also took his game to a higher level, demonstrating enhanced skills in the number three position.  Marinello has been working to transform the program into a consistent winner by stressing the need for players to be on the course, or at least swinging a club, nearly year-round.  But, overall he was pleased with the progress he saw in this year’s players.

“It was a very eager and enthusiastic team,” Marinello said.  “Playing partners worked well together to improve scores.  The team always displayed proper course etiquette and sportsmanship.

Next year’s projected lineup includes seniors Danny Goldstein, Brian Uvena and Joe Reilly, juniors Jeremy Rhodes and Gregory Nigro with a battle between junior Ryan Doyle and senior Chris Mearing for the sixth spot.

“All players have match experience but need to continue to improve their game prior to the season to be competitive next year,” Marinello said.  “The key to being competitive in the league will be for the fourth, fifth and sixth position golfers to consistently shoot between 40 and 45.”

Blue Devil Notes: Huntington turned back John Glenn and Smithtown East two times each, respectively . . . The Blue Devils finished fourth at the league invitational . . . In addition to Sanchez, Huntington will lose Ryan Brady, Zachary Moss and Patrick Wright to graduation.
