Three New ESL Teachers Join Faculty


Three new ESL (English as a second language) teachers have been appointed by the Huntington School Board to fill in for teachers who are taking time off for child care leaves of absence.

 

The teachers include Eric Stein, Jennifer Glatzer and Jill Lowe.  Mr. Stein and Ms. Glatzer were hired for the entire 2007-08 school year.  Ms. Lowe’s appointment will run through November 23.

 

Eric Stein

 

Eric Stein will teach ESL/social studies at Huntington High School.  He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and sociology from Queens College (1997) and a Master’s degree in special education and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) from the College of New Rochelle (2003).

 

Prior to coming to Huntington, Mr. Stein taught at John J. Pershing Intermediate School in Brooklyn and Frederick Douglass Academy VI High School in Far Rockaway. 

 

District officials reviewed 25 applications and conducted 11 interviews before recommending Mr. Stein for appointment. 

 

Jill Lowe

 

Jill Lowe will teach ESL at Southdown and Jefferson primary schools.  She graduated in 1997 from Western Oregon University with a B.A. degree in psychology.  She earned a Master’s degree in teaching at Pacific University in 2000 and studied ESL at Lewis and Clark College.

 

Ms. Lowe has worked as a fifth and sixth grade classroom teacher and as a sixth, seventh and eighth grade ESL language arts teacher, all in the David Douglas school district in Portland, Oregon from August 2000 to Sept. 2006.

 

District officials reviewed 10 applications and conducted five interviews before recommending Ms. Lowe for appointment.

 

Jennifer Glatzer

 

Jennifer Glatzer will teach ESL at Woodhull Intermediate School.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madision in 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in English.  She obtained her Master’s degree in education/TESOL at Hofstra University in 2007.  She completed her student teaching requirements in Valley Stream.

 

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Glatzer worked as an ESL teacher aide and substitute teacher in Oceanside and was an ESL summer school teacher this year at Valley Stream Central High School.  She has also worked as a private adult ESL tutor.

 

District officials reviewed 10 applications and conducted five interviews before recommending Ms. Glatzer for appointment.
