Summer Arts Enrichment Program a Hit

The annual Summer Arts Enrichment Program sponsored by the Organization of Music Parents of Huntington (OOMPAH) proved to be a rousing success.  A wide variety of music and art courses provided more than 210 students spread over grades 4-9 with four weeks of excitement and enjoyment.Summer Arts Color Guard

“This program is a Huntington School District tradition and is highly regarded by both students and parents,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “It provides fun summer activities without completely dominating the summer vacations of children.”

Students were able to select up to four courses that met daily under the direction of certified music and art teachers.  The performing arts courses included beginning instrumental instruction, dance, musical theater, color guard, kickline, advanced band and orchestra, jazz band, guitar, School of Rock, piano, and computer music composing.

The visual arts programs included digital photography, video, animation, painting and drawing, ceramics, jewelry design, 3D sculpture and fiber arts.

Huntington High School music and art students had an opportunity to serve as assistant teachers and program counselors.  On the last day of the program, the students gave a performance and art exhibit, demonstrating what they learned as parents in attendance applauded.

Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts.  “Over the years, the program grew to include art, dance and theater programs.  It is one of the most popular and reasonably priced programs around.”

Registration for next year's program will begin in mid-March 2008. The registration forms and details will be posted on the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu.
