Summer Art Exhibit at Library Provides Priceless Exposure

A month long exhibit at the Huntington Public Library on Main Street has provided four Huntington High School student-artists with the type of exposure that most teenagers only dream about.  The exhibit, “Summer Young Artists,” has been featured in the Library’s new art gallery on the facility’s lower level.  Its run stretched from July 31 to August 19.

Summer ArtistsThe exhibiting students include Katherine Beavers, Christine Kang, Marissa Rosenfeld and Daniele Siele.  They were selected by their art teachers for having exemplary work, worthy of such a prestigious opportunity.  Each student was responsible for preparing their works for the exhibit, meeting with the art gallery curator, Lisa Gulino, and participating in hanging the exhibit.  “Four proud families hosted an exhibit reception on August 11th,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts.

Library patrons marveled at the quality of the work produced by the high school students.  Ms. Beavers shared her expressive paintings of the human form, which was the focus of her Advanced Placement Art Studio project.  Ms. Kang exhibited drawings of her fashion designs, plucked from the work she has done in the high school's fashion and design illustration program.  Her work included a banner of 56 different fashion illustrations.

Ms. Rosenfeld shared her highly detailed, exemplary work in computer graphics, generated from her efforts in Huntington’s computer graphics program.  Ms. Siele rounded out the quartet with an exhibition of her extraordinary and vibrant colored pencil drawings, which were the focus of her AP Art Studio project.

“All of the young artists are interested in careers in the visual arts and will be serving as interns in our art program this fall, under the mentorship of our dedicated art faculty,” said Ms. Fretz, who attended the reception for the young artists.

The Huntington High School art department has developed strong relationships with area organizations and institutions, providing increased opportunities for students.  “Our art program is first rate in every way and the work our students produce is exceptional,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “We really do have an outstanding group of art teachers and student-artists.”

"I am so proud of and impressed by our student artists,” Ms. Fretz said.  “Their work is so advanced and expressive.   I felt as if I was at a professional art show.  We are most appreciative of the exhibit opportunity the Huntington Library gave our students. This will be a wonderful addition to their college portfolios.  We hope the public enjoyed seeing their work as much as they enjoyed the experience of having their own show."
