Austin Carino Becomes a Player on National Stage as a Freshman
Austin Carino stepped into the college sports world and had an immediate impact, helping lead the New York Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team to the NCAA Division II Final Four. The former Blue Devil great showed coaches and teams across the nation that his star is one the rise and it is expected to burn bright for the next three years.
Carino, who graduated Huntington High School in June 2006, proved to be a key cog in the NYIT lax machine, starting all 12 games and compiling a set of statistics that most college players can only dream about. The 5’8, 175 lb. attack quickly became one of the top players in the East Coast Conference.
NYIT (10-2) outscored its opponents 167-104 this spring with Carino accounting for 30 of the goals, including a hat-trick in the NCAA semifinals. That game saw Carino add an assist to his three goal performance as the Bears dropped a heartbreaker to top ranked Mercyhurst College, 13-10.
Carino’s scoring barrage included four game winners and five with NYIT up a man. He also tallied three assists. To put his season effort into even better perspective, the college freshman scored more than 72 percent of the time he took a shot on goal. His 68 shots included 49 on goal and he made almost every one of them count.
Game after game, Carino, who wears number 12 for NYIT, was magnificent. Against Notre Dame De Namur University, the Blue Devil alumnus scored four second half goals to help make the Bears a winner, 14-13. Twice this past spring the East Coast Conference tapped Carino for its Rookie of the Week Award. The honor came his way a second time after a two goal performance, including the game winner with 1:28 remaining in the second overtime in a 12-11 victory over Long Island rival Molloy College.
At Huntington, Carino was equally brilliant, winning All-County honors twice. He also lettered three times as a varsity soccer player. The 19 year old is the son of Julie and Ralph Carino. He is undecided about his academic major.
As a high school junior, Carino scored 84 goals, helping the Blue Devils to their first ever state championship. As a senior he scored 71 times and assisted on 11 other goals, as Huntington won a state crown a second consecutive year. He hasn’t missed a single step in the college game and appears headed for greatness.
