Washington Librarian Reminds Students of Summer Challenge
Washington Primary School librarian Georganne White is never too far removed from her students. Even in the dog days of summer, Ms. White is reminding students of something they need to do. In this case, the veteran faculty member wants the youngsters to remember the Summer Reading Challenge program.
“I have challenged each student to read, or have read to them, ten or more books this summer,” Ms. White said. “I gave each of them a packet explaining this. Their reading record sheets are due back to the Washington library no later than Wednesday September 19th.”
If students have lost their reading challenge sheets, a plain piece of paper listing the ten books with their parent's signature will suffice. Teachers and Washington Principal Marsha Neville have emphasized a commitment to reading on a daily basis. The same philosophy is practiced at the district’s other schools.
“The PTA honors these students with a certificate and a gift book,” Ms. White said. “Every year more and more students participate.” Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed on a bulletin board near the front of the school students, staff and visitors to see.
“Our students are encouraged to read books from the Huntington Public Library or from their own collection,” Ms. White explained. The source doesn’t matter to Ms. White only that the youngsters read.
