Huntington School Notes
At Huntington High School over the last three years, the number of Advanced Placement tests students have taken has increased from 390 in May 2005 and 440 in May 2006 to 478 in May 2007. Test scores in the 4-5 range have risen from 122 in May 2005 and 188 May 2006 to 232 in May 2007.
The trend for the lower scores in the 1-2 range has dropped from 153 in May 2005 and 120 in May 2006 to 114 this past May. There has also been a dramatic improvement in the AP Italian scores. The results improved from an average score of 1.8 to 4. The test was offered for the first time in May 2006.
Huntington School Board members accepted the resignation of Angela Apgar, who had been working at Washington Primary School as a special education teacher. The teaching position held by Vincenza Famiglietti-Caruso was excessed, but the Washington Primary School faculty member was hired back by the district in to fill in as a leave replacement for another teacher out of work on a leave of absence.
The Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is donating Chinese I books for Chinese language study by J. Taylor Finley Middle School students. Children’s Chinese Reader and workbooks for Books I and II for seventh and eighth grade are included. The volumes are published by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission. Huntington School District officials are continuing a dialogue with this organization with an eye toward instituting a Chinese language “Checkpoint A” course in the 2008-09 school year.
Huntington School Board members have approved use of the book, Forza! Uno, for use by students enrolled in the Italian-7 course at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. The book is authored by Michael Sedunary and was published in 2002 by EMC Paradigm.
“This textbook has stories and photographs to show what life is like in Italy and get students talking about there own life in Italian,” according to a review summary prepared for trustees. “It is a user friendly text that provides challenges in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Italian.”
The book was previously approved by the district’s Educational Development Committee prior to being taken up by the School Board for final action.
Huntington students Ryan Kushner and Anna Wertheim earned Excel Writing Awards this past June. Mr. Kushner, a high school student, won first place for an essay he penned. Ms. Wertheim, a Huntington Intermediate School student, grabbed honorable mention honors for a poem and essay she wrote.
