Class of 2002 President Earns College Academic-Athletic Honor

It’s been quite a ride for Meghan Turner, who in five years at Quinnipiac University earned Bachelor and Master degrees, overcame a serious injury and several knee operations to return to captain the women’s lacrosse team and received recognition as one of the top college student-athletes in the country this spring.

Ms. Turner, who was president of Huntington High School’s Class of 2002, earned a spot on the 2007 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll for her outstanding classroom performance and overall scholarly excellence.  She was one of two Quinnipiac players to be so honored.  Quinnipiac had the 10th highest grade point average out of 43 NCAA Division I lacrosse teams.

Those who followed her Huntington years closely never doubted Ms. Turner would be an unqualified college success.  The energy and enthusiasm she brings to whatever challenge she takes on is noticeable, even to the casual observer.

At Huntington’s 2002 commencement, Ms. Turner spoke flawlessly about what she and her fellow graduates had learned in high school, and what the future might hold.  “Our experiences at Huntington High School have taught us valuable lessons and are our link to the past and more importantly, the keys to our future,” she said.

“Whether the paths we now choose lead us to a career as a life-saving doctor, a skilled carpenter, a guiding teacher, a caring social worker, a trusty mechanic or a brilliant researcher, we all have the potential to become something extraordinary within ourselves,” Ms. Turner told fellow graduates.  “Every single member of this graduating class has great potential.  As we begin a new phase in our lives, our possibilities are endless.  It’s now up to each of us to take that potential and make a difference”

As for herself, Ms. Turner has done quite nicely, obtaining an undergraduate degree in public relations with a minor in English and earning a Master’s in interactive communications, all while playing at the highest level of women’s college lacrosse.  Her parents, Cathi and Keith Turner, are justifiably proud of their daughter.

It seems like only a few days ago that Ms. Turner stood at the 2002 graduation exercises and spoke to classmates from her heart.  “Underneath these goofy caps are the talents, dreams, ambitions and hopes that will raise families, build communities and change lives,” she said.  “Where we will be in 10 or 15 years remains a mystery.  But, no matter where it is, the experiences we shared and the lessons we learned over the years will forever bond us as the Class of 2002.”
