Huntington School Briefs

The Huntington Intermediate School environmental club enjoyed a successful year.  The group established a paper recycling program at the school, playing the state tree on school grounds, registered Huntington Intermediate’s courtyard as a wildlife habitat, planning fall bulbs in the courtyard and cleaned flower beds near the school’s entrance.  Some club members joined Earth Rangers, a weekend environmental education program.

The Huntington School District’s attendance teacher Noreen Hernandez found a total of 44 students residing outside the district during the 2006-07 school year despite their attendance in district schools.  The district has strict regulations about residency.  Non-resident students attending district schools put a burden on district taxpayers.  Such students are routinely told they cannot attend a district school without a legal residence within the district’s boundaries.  The non-residents included students on every single grade level from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Huntington School Board members appointed Sally Watson as a part-time foreign language teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School for the 2007-08 school year.

Ms. Watson graduated from Boricua College in Brooklyn in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in education.  She obtained her Master’s degree at Long Island University in 1995 in ESL.  She has worked as a dual language program teacher in Bay Shore (1998-2004), as a long-term Spanish substitute teacher in Syosset (2004-05) and as a Spanish teacher at Brentwood (2005 to Feb. 2007) and Uniondale (Mar. 2007 to June 2007) high schools.

District officials reviewed 21 applications and conducted five interviews before recommending Ms. Watson’s appointment.

Julia Schwartz has been appointed a long-term substitute English teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School for the 2007-08 school year.  She is filling in for Lynn Winters, who is taking a leave of absence in order to serve as a dean at Huntington Intermediate School.

Ms. Schwartz graduated from SUNY Binghamton in May 2003 with a Bachelor’s degree in English literature.  She obtained a Master’s degree at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in February 2006 in the teaching of English.

Ms. Schwartz worked last year in Huntington as a long-term substitute English teacher.  Prior to coming to the district, she worked as a sixth grade humanities and reading teacher in Mineola and in South Huntington as a leave replacement English teacher.  She completed her student teaching requirements at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in New York City.
