New SEARCH Teaching Position Takes Shape

The new part-time SEARCH teaching position will provide Huntington School District elementary grade level students with increased academic opportunities.  School trustees approved the establishment of the position on July 9.  No teacher has been hired yet to fill the spot.

In prior years, third graders participated in the SEARCH QUEST program for half of the school year.  The new teaching position will allow the district to provide these students with a full year of QUEST activities in all four primary buildings.

The new teacher will hold down QUEST teaching duties in two of the primary buildings and existing program staff will handle the other two primary schools and the two intermediate level buildings.  The new faculty member will also teach second grade enrichment classes and two days a week handle intermediate grade level SEARCH classes.

SEARCH (Scholastic Enrichment and Resource for Children in Huntington), a program for academically talented elementary school students, was created more than 25 years ago.  “SEARCH has served our students well over the years and it continues to provide students in the program with the academic challenges they need to grow intellectually,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.

QUEST (Questioning, Understanding, Exploring for Students in Third grade) is a program that centers on problem solving and analytical thinking that cuts across all disciplines.  The activities include comparing and contrasting, analogies, critical thinking, open-ended discussions and the reinforcement of reading comprehension and character analyses through the use of children’s plays.

The new SEARCH teacher will also be expected to attend all department meetings, help plan and organize parent nights, attend program field trips and related activities and meet with the parents of new SEARCH students in the late winter.
