The Huntington boys’ soccer team opened the fall campaign in fine fashion, toppling visiting Connetquot in overtime, 2-1.

The Blue Devils struck first when Luis Ortiz scored a first half goal off an assist from Freddie Amato to give Huntington a 1-0 lead. Connetquot responded about 10 minutes into the second frame. Chris Gordon blasted a shot past Huntington’s All-County goalie, Nat Amato to knot the game at 1-1.

After 80 minutes of regulation play, the game was a standoff. So the contest headed into overtime at Blue Devil Stadium. Just 1:40 into the first overtime period, John Tucker scored off a rebound off a header from Julien Rentsch to give Huntington a victory in the first game of the season.

Nat Amato stopped three shots in goal as the Blue Devil defense formed an iron curtain. Connetquot goalie Thomas Foschino recorded eight saves.

“I thought it was a decent game, but we weren’t playing how we should be playing,” Nat Amato said. “I think it was just a game to get the jitters out, so it wasn’t a bad start.”

Huntington head coach John Pagano and assistant coach Jason Suarez are working with a new cast after losing many of last year’s starters to graduation.

“We are a young team with only six seniors on the squad,” Pagano said. “Although we are very young, we have a lot of potential. We have three of the top nine teams in Suffolk in our league, so making the playoffs will be a challenge with such a young team, but starting off we have a great attitude and work ethic.”

Huntington dropped a 3-1 verdict at Rocky Point on Saturday. The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 at halftime before tying the score at 1-1 early in the second half. The Eagles went on to score the final two goals of the game.

Eren Aydin scored Huntington’s goal off an assist from Luis Ortiz. Nat Amato made eight saves in goal.

Xavier Guey-Mock scored all three goals for Rocky Point. Eagle goalie Noah Pagnotta stopped three Blue Devil shots.
