The Huntington boys’ fencing team appears well-positioned for success next winter. The Blue Devils won six matches this season with a roster that included just four seniors and a whopping 21 underclassmen.

Coached by Michelle O’Brien, Huntington was captained by junior Dylan Bluemer and seniors Dawson Wallace and Connor Grosso. The Blue Devils compiled a 6-10 mark overall, placing sixth the league and seventh in Suffolk.

Junior Finneas Tucker captured first team All-County honors and honorable mention All-Long Island recognition in epee after going 31-5. Junior Quinn Blackburn was second team All-County in epee, notching a 21-12 mark.

Huntington’s top fencers also included juniors Joshua Yanuck (29-16 in foil) and Zachary McGinniss (17-17 in sabre) and Wallace (15-14 in foil). All three athletes were honorable mention All-County. Wallace was an alternate on the All-Suffolk foil senior team.

Wallace enjoyed a very strong campaign, outdueling Walt Whitman’s Adam Meskill, 5-3. Meskill went on to finish second in the county.

One of the season’s highlights came when freshmen Gabriel Medina-Jaudes and Riley Tucker earned their first varsity wins in sabre and epee, respectively.

“We have a motivated squad of fencers who will hopefully work to improve their skills in the offseason,” O’Brien said.

With nearly two dozen team members eligible to return next winter, Huntington seems capable of jumping several places in the standings.

“Most of the team will return and hopefully they will be fencing in the offseason in order to continue developing their skills,” O’Brien said. “Perhaps they will attend a summer camp.”

Another team will be in the mix next year as Lindenhurst is expected to field a squad. O’Brien said could lead to a league restructuring.
