Washington School Presents Students with Awards

February's Washington Ways Award recipients with Principal Marsha Neville.

March 9, 2017

Washington Primary School students reacted in their typically enthusiastic manner when Principal Marsha Neville announced over the building’s public address system that it was time to present two sets of awards.

The Washington Ways Award and being designated as a Featured Artist of the Month are both coveted by the 425 youngsters spread across grades K-4 who are studying at Washington School.

One by one, Mrs. Neville announced the names of the honorees and the cheers of their classmates could be heard throughout the building. “It’s wonderful that our students support each other and are genuinely happy when someone in their class wins an award.”

The Washington Ways initiative focuses on recognizing and rewarding positive behavior while encouraging students to be safe, respectful and responsible. Students across all grade levels are given various colored tickets by teachers and support staff members for exemplary behavior. The tickets can be presented to the youngsters throughout the day.

White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.

Red tickets are presented to individuals for notable good behavior outside of classrooms, including in hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate. Mrs. Neville announces the names of the honorees during a full school monthly assembly in the gym.

Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior out-of-the-classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall.

February’s Washington Ways Award recipients include Marvin Matamoros Flores, Michael Villatoro Benitez, Ethan Hobbi, Yubin Ahn, Samantha Jimenez Acosta, Jaden Guardado, Emmet Cocoman, Natalie Mullaly, Charles Derochers III, Andreana Vlahos, Olivia Lee, Devin Splendorio, Xavier Garcia, Catherine Jimenez, Ruby Baliber, CJ Repecki, Julianna Ackerman, Juanita Marquez-Alvarez, Julissa Quintanilla, Brandon Cohen and Jibreel Murtaza.

The award winners were given certificates and later posed for a photo with Mrs. Neville.
